Better Discovery Cannot Create a Problem Nobody Is Looking For

An overlooked plugin and an unwanted plugin can look exactly alike in a directory statistic: both may have very few active installations.

That is why WP Repo's low-installation distribution is important but insufficient. Adoption data alone cannot tell us whether a plugin is being missed or whether demand for its function is weak.

First the user needs to recognize a problem

A WordPress site owner might experience a slow checkout, an awkward publishing workflow or a recurring technical error without knowing the cause.

There is often a path from experience to a plugin search:

Symptom → investigation → requirement → candidate discovery → evaluation.

An AI assistant can help identify the user's actual requirement. It may ask diagnostic questions and explain possible causes. That is useful. But a clearer requirement still needs arelevant candidate inventory at the discovery stage.

Two distinct gaps

Demand or awareness gap: Few people recognize the problem, understand that a solution exists or consider it worth solving.

Discovery gap: People actively seek the capability, but the relevant plugin is absent from the candidates they see.

Both can happen at once. A plugin with fewer than ten reported installations is not proof of either one.

The interventions also differ. Education, diagnosis and product development can help with awareness or demand. Better retrieval and functional interpretation can help when an existingrequirement fails to reach a suitable plugin.

Why this strengthens the AI discovery argument

Blaming every low-installation plugin on bad search would be as misleading as assuming every low-installation plugin is irrelevant.

A stronger claim is narrower and testable: given an expressed requirement and a defined inventory, does the recommendation process identify the available functional candidates?

That question isolates the part a discovery system can reasonably be expected to solve. It also avoids promising that WP Repo will manufacture demand or turn every plugin into a successful product.

Where WP-Repo draws the line

WP-Repo is being developed for the requirement-to-candidate step, initially within a defined subset of WordPress.org plugins. It is not a general troubleshooting service,a code certification authority or a promise of adoption.

Discovery cannot create a need. But once a need is expressed, popularity should not decide which documented solutions get examined.
